What Is DTS? And why does it matter to my recording of the Messiah?

DTS stands for Digital Theater Systems. It is a "master-quality" multi-channel surround sound technology used for movies and music. DTS uses Coherent Acoustics, which is a highly flexible compression algorithm that uses sampling rates up to 192 kHz and up to 24-bit resolution. Compared to CDs, which uses linear PCM coding (44.1 kHz sampling rate and 16-bit sample size).
When analog audio is converted to digital it is "sampled." CDs consist of two channels of 16-bit PCM audio sampled 44,100 times per second (44.1 kHz). Using a 16-bit sample size, the sampled frequency can contain 65,536 (2^16) possible amplitude levels. With a 24-bit audio, the sampled frequency can contain 16,777,216 (2^24) possible amplitude levels. This huge difference in the number of possible amplitude levels results in a much less harsh and more dynamic sounding recording. It is a near-perfect reproduction of the original "master" source.  Coupled with the NightPro recording system, this ensures that your listening experience on The Messiah will be as close to a live performance as possible.

DTS In Theaters
DTS first hit the theater in 1993 with the release of Jurassic Park. While DTS is a six-channel surround sound, like Dolby Digital, it differs from Dolby Digital in a number of significant ways. Like Dolby Digital, DTS has a very large presence in theaters. There are currently nearly 18,000 theaters that feature DTS surround sound playback.

In the theater, Dolby Digital is encoded directly on the film between the film sprockets. DTS uses a CD to store the soundtrack and it uses a sophisticated playback system that makes sure that the correct sound is played for each frame on the film. DTS does include a backup stereo track on the film in case of a catastrophic failure with the CD sound.

DTS On DVD
All Dolby Digital soundtracks on DVD are not necessarily six-channel (5.1). Dolby Digital soundtracks can be from one to six channels, with the vast majority of the Dolby Digital releases NOT being discrete six-channel surround sound. Many are four-channel Dolby Surround (ProLogic) or even mono. Conversely, DTS releases are ONLY 5.1. DTS delivers "master quality" six-channel surround sound. The DTS process does not do anything to enhance the sound. DTS simply samples the soundtrack at high rates and compresses the result based on a sophisticated compression algorithm based on human hearing characteristics.

DTS DVDs are superior in sound quality to their Dolby Digital counterparts. The sound is much more dynamic and smoother sounding. The bass channels are clear and deep. Just listen to the lush orchestrations on The Messiah and you will see the effort in mastering this DTS version was worth all the effort.

DTS CDs
Although there are a number of DTS encoded CDs, this is the only DTS version of The Messiah which features the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and used the most advanced recording system in the world, the NightPro system.
They are 20-bit recordings, which offer a considerable sound improvement of the standard 16-bit CDs. Most of them are also discrete six-channel (5.1) recordings.

Equipment Required For DTS Playback
You must have a DVD player that outputs the DTS signal. Most newer players have this. You must also have a DTS decoder that is either built into a receiver or is added to you system via a stand-alone processor.

DTS is a great technology that is starting to make its way into consumer electronics. The technology offers sound quality that is significantly better than both CD audio and Dolby Digital audio. DTS is a great addition to your home theater or audio system. DTS is a great way to enjoy the 5.1 surround sound of your Messiah DVD-Audio disc.
